A response to the Heartbeat of God’s Spirit in the heart of the French Revolution: The birth of two Religious Societies
(July 19, 1790 & August 18, 1790)

Inspirations are divine sparks. They ignite transformation and possibilities if we recognize and honor the spiritual dimension. As we navigate our life’s journey, it’s vital that we need to be inspired and we seek inspirations to augment our lives. I believe that we all have had such sparks to recall in our lives - a moment where we are stirred to change, to grow and to understand what it means to be innovational and resourceful. The inspiration of the Spirit takes us beyond ourselves, fills us with a profound source of power and energy to take risks and respond to critical situations. It implies letting God to direct our lives, disregarding the overwhelming challenges and trials one foresees ahead of the road. This is what we can see in Fr. Peter Joseph de Cloriviere – a man who used to patiently wait for God’s moments and never wanted them to slip by when God deigned to grant the same. In the year 1790, France was at the height of turbulence due to the French Revolution; in fact, it quaked France to its foundation. It was during this upheaval and troubled period the three important political decisions of the revolutionary government upshot the deep personal conviction of our founder: ‘the abolition of solemn Vows, the votes on the Civil Constitution of the Clergy and the imposition of Constitutional Oath upon the clergy’. Fr. Peter de Cloriviere thought of going to America to evangelize Maryland and perhaps had the plans to reestablish the Society of Jesus there. On 29th June he received his bishop’s authorization to leave. It was in this context, he received the inspiration of July 19, 1790 ‘in the twinkling of an eye’ a plan for a new form of religious life with a universal nature; without any exterior distinguishing sign nor in a common dwelling but would devote entirely to God through the three evangelical vows. He perceived this as a possibility to preserve total consecration to God adapted to the political conditions at that time. The members outwardly will not be separated from the world, but inwardly they belong entirely to God – a religious life lived in a firm but flexible form adapted to respond to the needs and cultures of all continents of each era. Fr. Peter de Cloriviere himself detailed this inspiration in several of his accounts for its clarity and precision which left no room for doubt that it came from God as a response to historical circumstances. Fr. Peter de Cloriviere then founded two Societies. After completing his plan for ‘A Religious Society of Men’, on August 18, 1790, he drew up a Plan for Women which was a second inspiration, a thought that had struck him forcibly to start doing a similar one for young women and widows. This was a plan that converged with the project of Adelaide de Cice presented to him on August 4, 1787 but within a framework of a new dimension. Therefore, without any hesitation he entrusted Adelaide with the great responsibility of being the co-foundress. Thus, the Society of the Daughters of the Heart of Mary which primarily took shape in the heart of God was born into this world to love and to serve the humanity for the greater glory of God. As we commemorate the ‘Inspiration Day’, I would like to pen a thought that crossed my mind while working on this article. Every ‘Holy Inspiration’ is a gentle, quiet compelling voice of God’s spirit. As Daughters of the Heart of Mary, following the footsteps of our founders, we are invited to grow in grace to listen to the inner heart beat of God’s spirit, believe it, live it and allow ourselves to be living stones that create ripples of love, peace and compassion to all around.
